More students rev up hybrids for Challenge X competition
This week students at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) unveiled their entry for the upcoming Challenge X contest sponsored by General Motors and the Department of Energy. The Chevrolet Equinox donated by contest co-sponsor General Motors is powered by a biodiesel hybrid engine. According to the RHIT team, the SUV should reach 35 miles-per-gallon. Seventeen participants are developing more efficient SUVs that they will demonstrate at this year's contest taking place at GM's Proving Grounds in Phoenix, Arizona. Vehicles are judged not only on fuel efficiency but acceleration, towing, seating and even "feel."
Other entrants include San Diego State University and a joint team from Southeastern High School and Crockett Technical High School.
