The Detroit Free Press reports this morning that DaimlerChrysler will be offering a diesel powered version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2007. The 2007 Grand Cherokee will be powered by a 3.0-liter common rail turbo diesel engine built at a Mercedes-Benz plant in Berlin. Not everyone in the should go running towards their Jeep dealerships though, since they won't be able to sell the diesel-powered Grand Cherokee in five states because of emission laws. The projected improvement in mpg will be modest though, 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The 2006 Grand Cherokee Limited with a V8 engines gets 17 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. I wonder if the engine option will be targeted more towards people that are looking for excellent towing capacity, which I am sure the diesel option will provide.

DCX, what happened to the diesel Caliber or PTC for North American rather than another inefficient SUV?

This 3-liter diesel is already available in Europe and as far as I know it's one of the best diesel engines I've seen on any SUV. 160KW/218hp does the Jeep a lot of good. You sure have something to wait for if you want decent performance and a lowish fuel consumption.

Yes, DCX - How about a diesel minivan? I've got three kids in booster seats - an SUV isn't particularly helpful. But I also tow a popup camper - a diesel minivan would be awesome.

In Europe they have a 2.8L TD Caravan with a 5 speed stick and a Grand Caravan with the same V6 TD that they're putting into the Jeep so it seems that with enough demand it would be possible.

They need to bring over the diesel Wrangler before anything else.

Great to see a diesel! Way to go Jeep! Better economy with good power. Win Win. Good for towing, and off road too. Lets also get the PT Cruiser CRD diesel (in Europe), and the Jeep Wrangler with a diesel in Canada/North America as well. Let the people have a choice for diesel power. An option that makes more and more sense.
