Citroen introduces new twin-turbo diesel engine

Citroen, in partnership with Peugeot and Ford, has developed a new 2.2 liter 4 cylinder diesel engine which uses a sequential dual turbo setup. The design is aimed at improving engine response at low speed, and minimize turbo lag. The engine, which delivers 170 bhp and 370 Nm of torque, delivers its maximum torque from 1,500 rpm on. The system uses two identical fixed geometry turbochargers, with each of them delivering about half the air required for the engine at high speeds. At low speeds, only one turbocharger is active, while at high speeds both deliver the air needed for the engine. The second turbochargers starts spinning up before it delivers air into the air intake system, which improves the power delivery characteristics of the engine. Since the turbochargers only work when needed, the engine reduces fuel consumption and emissions over the previous generation engine, while vehicle performance improves by about 20 percent. Who says you can't have your cake and eat it to?
