BMW introduces powerful X3 diesel engines

BMW just introduced its new X3, and for the first time in a BMW model, the range-topping model in terms of performance is powered by a diesel engine. The engine, which will be powering the X3 3.0 sd, has an all-aluminum six-cylinder diesel engine with piezo injectors and is coupled to a six speed automatic transmission. The engine is equipped with two variable twin turbo chargers, generating 286hp and a whopping 580Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. While the new Citroen 2.2l diesel uses two turbo chargers of equal size, in the BMW engine a small turbo charger engages in the low speed range, while a second larger turbo charger takes care of delivering air in the higher speed and higher power range. The new X3 3.0 sd accelerates from 0 to 100 km in just 6.6 seconds. The average consumption of the range topping model is 27 mpg, while a slightly lower powered version of the engine manages close to 30 mpg, respectable figures for a car this size. Sadly enough, it doesn't look like we will see either of these engines in the U.S. any time soon. My hope is that by writing about these fuel efficient diesel options available to everyone outside the North American market, more consumers will ask for them at their dealers of choice, and a few more will become available.
