British Motor Show to spark with SMART fortwo EV's arrival

Big Sib Autoblog has posted details on the SMART fortwo EV electric vehicle. The EV, which debuts at the British Motor Show next week, will later be leased to various corporate fleets throughout the UK on a trial basis. SMART maker DaimlerChrysler will then evaluate and see if it will expand production of the diminutive vehicle or even sell it to the U.S. States Mercedes Car Group. Managing Director Dermot Kelly said, "A market trial of the SMARt fortwo EV is a significant step for the Mercedes Car Group as it is an important part of our commitment to sustainable mobility."
The SMART fortwo EV stats are impressive. The 30kW engine has a 72-mile range and top speed of 70 mph. And its ability to hustle from 0-30 mph in 6.5 makes it even faster than its petrol-sibling.

If the price were right I would get one. Could drive a bit cheaper to my park and ride in the morning.

Great idea, but they are only available on lease at over £300 per month to corporate customers at first.

God I want one. I have a short daily work commute, live in a suburban city, but things are well close enough to use this as an all but long trips driver... Maybe in a couple years, sigh.

Wow ! Just think...0 - 30 in just 6.5 seconds ! I'm sure hoping this is a misprint as my mountain bike on level ground will whip this rides butt.

I like the idea of EV cars. However, this thing looks like a death trap to me. I realize that to eek out the outstanding performance (for an EV) from this car they need to reduce weight, but it looks like you'd be toast if you collided with a Mini Cooper driving this thing.
What's the charge time for that outstanding (I'm being sarcastic) 70 mile range? This thing seems to be only slightly better performing than a golf cart.
