London Mayor wants higher fee for most-polluting cars
London Mayor Ken Livingstone wants to make changes to the three-year-old congestion charging system, in order to tax the most polluting personal vehicles more than the cleaner ones. The congestion charge is currently £8 per car, regardless of what vehicle you are driving, each time you enter the center of London. The Mayor wants to lower the fee for cars producing very little carbon dioxide, while he proposes a fee of around £25 (about $45) for cars producing very high amounts of carbon dioxide. Anyone who has spent any time in London can attest to the ridiculous amount of traffic, combined with a love for high-end cars, including large luxury SUVs, exotic sports cars, and lots of luxury sedans. Not to nitpick, but Ken Livingston is the Mayor of London, not the Major. Check it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayor_of_London

Doesn't the fuel tax already account for disparities in fuel consumption.
Doesn't vehicle registration already do this.
what a jerk.

I cycle 6 miles through central London to work every day and I can tell you it’s not primarily the large luxury SUVs, exotic sports cars, and lots of luxury sedans that are the primary cause of London's pollution and smog...
Doesn't the idiot of a Mayor realise that the most polluting vehicles in London are all the turbo diesel busses and taxis he is encouraging. These cough out nasty black smog which is ten times worse pollutant than the lower fuel economy but cleaner burning petrol luxury sports cars, SUV's and sedans.
If the fool wanted to do something useful to reduce pollution in London he would help promote the use of electric busses... if cities such as Quito in Ecuador and Budapest in Hungary (to just name a few developing cities with electric busses) can afford to do it why can't we?????
