Julia Roberts promotes biofuels

Julia Roberts has agreed to become a spokesperson for Earth Biofuels, a manufacturer of biodiesel and ethanol. Earth Biofuels already has some superstar support, with Morgan Freeman and Willie Nelson on their board of directors. The first task for Roberts will be to join the push to get the 500,000 U.S. diesel-burning school buses to switch to clean-burning biodiesel in order to reduce emissions and greenhouse gases and improve the health of kids who are often more susceptible to pollution. Roberts portrayed Erin Brockovich in an Oscar-winning performance. Roberts wishes she could be more like the character she portrayed, fighting relentlessly for what she believed in. I wonder if we will see her drink biodiesel any time soon, just like Daryl Hannah. [Source: People Magazine]

Who gives a care? Why should an endorsment from this woman impress me - is she truely qualified to recomend a change in the nations fuel consumption habits?

I think we all recognize Smokey the Bear as the "spokesperson" for Fire Safety. What qualifies a cartoon character to tell us what to do about camp fires?
Being a spokesperson is just that, someone who is hired to advocate for a cause. You may not care if Julia Roberts knows anything about biofuels or not, but having a well known individual representing your organization is certainly a plus.
Making a big deal about the individuals instead of the cause is just playing into the critics' ploys.
Now, there will be cases where a celebrity promotes one agenda, but then caught doing the opposite; for example, Arnold schwarzenegger. He promotes conservation, but then drives around a
Hummer. Should I give up the ideals of conservation just because one person didn't live up to the message? No one is perfect, and sometimes not everyone can be a role model. The point is, if you believe in fuel conservation, then you do what you can to follow the principles. Spokesperson and their sponsors are just there to promote the message. If you left individuals and their quirks make you feel unsure about alternative fuels or conservation, then you probably didn't really believe in the effort in the first place.

I think it is great that she is going to use the notoriety she has earned to do something to help this country become a leader in this alternative fuel resource. If we do it then others will follow. That is the way it is. Leaders lead and the rest want to be like the leader. Those of Hollywood need to do more leading in some better ways instead of drugs, nudity, perversion, living as they have earned a right to be above the law. They need to have a 3 strikes your out for Hollywood. You should have to do humanitarian efforts to be able to even be a star. To long have the stars lived for fame and fortune. They should all be required take a course in:

They need to help get our great nation back to the one true GOD instead of trying to make new gods of fame, fortune, and frivolous living. This nation began with great men and women. It will end when we no longer produce and hold to those same qualities.

As a spokesperson for a bio fuel company she would not encourage me to try the product, But I would much rather see and hear her the Willie Nelson. Now if they can get Al Gore as a source for hot air balloons, or Ted Kenedy as a Alchohol based fuel rep that is believable

Hooray for Julia Roberts! She has not only herself to think of now.....but a young family as well! Her notoriety should add the necessary ingredients to the push for biodiesel fuels. How about pushing for the lobby on the trucking industry, period. We need more individuals to step forward in this pollution battle!Are you ready?

I think it is great that Ms. Roberts has taken a stand. She has children and wants to have grandchildren on a planet that will sustain life. I have a biodiesel car. It is not rocket science. It is a small step along the path toward decreased consumption and decreased dependence. For the religious, were we meant to have dominion over the world, or to be good stewards? If Ms. Roberts is passionate and committed to the cause it will help the effort. And, by the way, for Chance, you were allowed to comment on this news without formal knowledge of spelling, so why should Ms. Roberts not be given a similar opportunity

Let's see, I should give immediate credibility to a hugely rich person who, along with her organization of publicists and posse, is responsible for burning the fossil fuel equal to that of 50 people easily?
A little like Mr. Burns hiring Homer Simpson as the spokesperson for nuclear power safety don't you think?

This is ridiculous and Julia Roberts is a moron. Biodiesel does not necessarily burn any cleaner than regular diesel. Biodiesel is considered "green" because it is a renewable fuel source. Converting all the school buses to biodiesel will not reduce its emissions.
As for all the ethanol fuel lovers out there, E85 gets you as much as 30% FEWER miles per gallon than regular gasoline. What's up with that?

it takes more energy to produce ethanol than it produces.
It only appears to burn cleaner yet it still lets

no one factors the amount of polution is created while burning oil to cook mash and produce ethanol
if ADM could produce ethanol with the ethanol it already produced, it would. YOU CANT.
A refinery in the US can produce more gasoline in one day than all of the ethanol produced in the world in a year. this is not a liberal or conservitave argument. you are being lied to. Ethanol and bio fuels are not viable alternatives to the energy problem and never will be. They are only
something to talk about while avoiding the real issue,,finding more oil, drilling for it , transporting it,,etc.

It is hard to imagine how any thinking person could ever be influenced by anyone whose job is pretending to be someone else. Does Julia Roberts even know who she is? How could she? She is always pretending to be someone else. Her role as a prostitute in "Pretty Woman" may be as close as she will ever come to the real Julia. She was very good at "pretending" to be a real hooker.
It is no wonder the Hollywood humanoids are always screwed up, in and out of drug/ETOH rehab or clawing each others eyes out trying to get a spot on a magazine cover or the Tonight show.
It is fun to enjoy their performances when they are pretending to be someone else. It is foolish to listen to them when they try to use their "big star" influence to promote some cause which they are pretending to believe in. They will pretend to be for any cause that gets them additional publicity.

Who cares if she is "qualified" to make recommendations on our country's addiction to fossil fuels? She drives a car, right? Anyone who drives a fuel burning car is adequately qualified. If her celebrity raises awareness of the need to find alternatives, more power to her! Get the chip off your shoulder and focus more positive energy on the big picture and the end goal.

The fact that biodiesel is renewable is enough for me. If they can hone it to a cleaner burning fuel, it will be even better. And it will be a boon to soybean farmers in the US...unless we start importing from another country...and screw our farmers again.
