Pioneer in alternative fuels, energy remembered
A Detroit columnist for an alternative weekly recently chastised his local comrades for not recognizing the monumental achievements of Iris Ovshinsky when she died in a drowning accident two weeks ago. We should also receive a few lashes for missing the news.Iris and her husband Stan founded Energy Conversion Devices in 1960, better known as Ovonics today. They were pioneers in solar cell development and alternative fuel technology. If you have a device with a nickel-metal-hydride battery, you can thank the Ovshinskys.
The two were most recently featured in the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car?"
