Cradle-to-grave sustainability report on UK motor industry
The UK motor industry is adopting a cradle-to-grave approach to sustainability, according to a sustainability report published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The report, The UK Automotive Sector – Towards Sustainability, is 40 PDF pages of pie charts and resource consumption statistics and is available for free. SMMT found that UK-based car and commercial vehicle manufacturers are, as a whole, showing "significant progress on key measures of environmental performance". This is the seventh annual report, and SMMT says the motor sector was the first to give an annual sustainability report and this year's report is the first that looks at the life of a vehicle and the environmental challenges along the way.
There is a lot of good news in the report. For example, five best-selling 2005 models (the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Focus, Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Zafira and Land Rover Freelander) all emit less CO2 than comparable 2000 models. SMMT found that in the 26 key "performance indicators", more than half showed progress while six have remained static. Some, like Volatile Organic Compounds emissions, show a negative trend.
