EPA official, Cummins mark introduction of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel
By now most diesel fuel already in the pipeline is meeting the new federal standards for sulfur. But the official nationwide switch to ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel is Oct. 15. To mark the occasion, Cummins hosted EPA administrator Stephen Johnson to the company's test facilitiy.ULSD is critical to Cummins and other diesel manufacturers in meeting tough diesel emissions restrictions that go into effect Jan. 1, 2007. Sulfur can play havoc with after-exhaust treatment components, much the same way leaded gas did with the introduction of catalytic converters. When fully implemented, the new emission technology will reduce particulates or soot by 90 percent. The new fuel will also help cut emissions in older engines.
