Toyota to take aim at Smart's ForTwo
It looks like the diminutive urban commuter segment is about to get a little more crowded. Auto Express is reporting that Toyota will be releasing a small, high-mileage, city car based on the futuristic Endo concept that was first unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Auto Show.
With dimensions of 118 inches long and 66.5 inches wide, the little Toyota is clearly aimed at competing directly with the Smart ForTwo. The Japanese variant will supposedly be 12 inches longer and 3.5 inches wider than the new ForTwo, though, the Toyota will allow seating for four. Auto Express says it should hit U.K. dealers in 2007.
As for whether or not the Endo will follow the Smart ForTwo to American shores, your guess is as good as ours. The timing is certainly right. Perhaps, Toyota will let Smart do the heavy lifting in marketing super-small transportation to Americans and then start distributing the Endo through its Scion brand. And maybe we'll even see a hybrid version. Call me an optimist, but it could happen.

I am a lifelong Toyota person. I've had pickups, Corollas and 2 Camrys. They are great cars, got fantastic mileage, and had a LOT of miles on them. This little car is totally cute. I love little cars anyway, so would buy this one in a minute. Sign me up, NOW>

It is small but as far as being a death trap, I ride a motorcycle. It's still safer then that. Also if you drive defensively you ought not to crash.

i loved it.....I JUST GOT RID OF A JAGUAR S MODEL AND IT HAD TO BE THE WORST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED IN MY LIFE........PITY THE GUY WHO BOUGHT IT.WHAT A LEMON.EVERY WEEK IT WAS IN THE GARAGE FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS OF REPAIRS AND JAGUAR DIDNT GIVE A HOOT WHEN I CALLED THEM.......DONT EVER EVER BUY A JAGUAR.I HAVE PASSED THAT INFO AROUND TO EVERYONE......THE BALL JOINTS BROKE TWICE ON THE SAME WHEEL!!!THANK GOODNESS I WASNT ON THE FREEWAY AT THE TIME OR I WOULDNT BE ALIVE TODAY!!!!DO NOT BUY A JAGUAR!!!!1

What a beautiful alternative to Mercedes' For-Two. If it does land on U.S. shores I would forgo purchasing a scooter or motorcycle now and await its arrival. Hopefully with a two cylinder turbo diesel.

Our family 1992 Toyota MR2 is still going strong at 197,000 miles. It can't be that much bigger than this car. The MR2 started with my husband, was passed down to our son, and then to our daughter. Just brought it back from our trusted mechanic who says she's got another 200,000 miles left on her. Death Trap? I think when your number is called, you're outta here no matter what you drive.

GM are you watching and listening? We owned a Chevy Sprint some years ago. What a fun car & 50 MPG! We also own a 3/4 ton Silverado for hauling horses. Consumers really do want a 'round town, economical & smart car. You CAN produce a consumer friendly car. Take away the ego and the "need" for speed & acceleration and gee the company may turn around.

Do you know how much it would sell for? It does look like a perfect alternative to a second car for us. We have our full sized ones (1 at our summer place and one at our winter place and I was thinking of getting a motorcycle or scooter for each place a a second mode of transportation, but this would be even better. Keep us all posted.
The only thing I don't like it's that it's a Toyta. I know they are good cars and all, but every time we have tried to shop for one, the dealers were just terrible to us and they didn't seem to be willing to negotiate at all. This made us wonder about the servicing at those dealers. I'm not talking in the same towns even, these were cities significantly apart from each other and at least 3 different deals.
