13 ways to make getting around more green (and safer)

Been wanting to make your transportation a little easier on the earth but don't know where to start? Or, if you're already doing a little bit, do you want to do more? Whatever your situation, Treehugger's got some simple tips for you. Their post on the top ten effective ways to go greener includes ones you've heard before (ride a bus, walk more) as well as some less easy ways to greenify getting around (telecommute, become an activist for public transportation). On top of their ten tips, the list also includes three ways to do more: ditch your car, buy carbon offset vouchers for your trips, and raise your voice in support of even cleaner public transportation (don't just advocate for a bus line, demand a bus line with hybrid buses).
One fact jumped out at me, and it has nothing to do with being environmentally friendly: riding a bus is 79 times safer than riding in your own automobile. I don't know where Treehugger got this statistic, but it sure makes me feel better about stepping on a bus.

This kind of advice is stupid. Walking saves gas? Really? I'm glad some pundit needs to tell me that.
Don't own a car?? That's f---ing ridiculous for 99% of households. I've lived many many places in my life, and I've never lived anywhere where I could possibly forego a car. Not if I want to have a job or buy groceries.
Why don't these knuckleheads just stick to advising people to s--t on a compost heap. But by all means, YOU people should heed this advice. It'll make MY gasoline cheaper if you do, and then I can buy a Hummer.

"riding a bus is 79 times safer than riding in your own automobile."
Not on the Los Angeles Orange Line it isn't. One year ago this new route opened up ( use to be railroad track ) and the buses were in accidents almost everyday from the very first day of operation until about i guess 2 months later. We motorist in LA aren't use to seeing buses, especially a orange grey one that's half a bus longer than your normal bus. Well, on the 1st anniversary ( less than 5 days ago )guess what happen to bring in the celebration. WHAM!

We often consider the energy crisis, and its affect on our economy, in terms of gas prices and how much it costs to fill up the tank of our car. It is sometimes overlooked by consumers in general that an even bigger impact of the rising cost of oil comes from the rising cost of transportation of goods....

The world faces an energy crisis. Everyone is affected by - and part of - this problem. This site is dedicated to collaborative consideration of innovative approaches to solving or at least mitigating this problem; sort of an informal think tank if you will; open to participation by anyone anywhere.
