City of Berkeley commits to purchase 40 plug-in hybrid vehicles
The city of Berkeley, California has committed to buy a fleet of plug-in hybrid vehicles as soon as a car maker actually starts to build some. Berkeley is planning on purchasing 40 plug-in hybrids and follows a previous decision by Marin County to make a similar "soft-order". Even though no car-maker is currently building such vehicles, municipalities are indicating their intentions in an effort to demonstrate that there is sufficient demand to justify production. Several other Bay Area governments and agencies have also indicated their intentions to purchase plug-in hybrids, including San Francisco, Oakland and Pacific Gas and Electric.

The combination of Phoenix Motor Cars, Boshart Engineering, and Altairnano has successfully produced and publicly demonstrated two all-electric vehicles within the past five weeks. The first showing of an all-electric SUV and an all-electric SUT occured at the CARB symposium, held at Sacramento Sept. 27-29. Many symposium visitors were given demonstration rides. The second showing happened at the SEMA show at Las Vegas Nov. 1-4. The vehicles are powered by Altair's unique Li Ion batteries, (they don't catch fire), have a range of more than 100 miles, a recharge time of less than 10 minutes, and a 0-60 time of about 10 seconds. The vehicles are being produced for delivery in early 2007 to a restricted market. For additional general or technical information go to Altairnano.com.
