Dirty tricks going on in California surrounding Proposition 87?

It's not like there's a shortage of dirty tricks going around this campaign season, but this is the first one I've heard of regarding cars and renewable energy. The Yes on 87 group is accusing oil and tobacco companies (really? tobacco companies?) of printing up a "bogus" Voter Information Guide for Democrats some Proposition 87 supporters say they have been getting in the main. Tony Rubenstein, founder and chairman of Yes on 87 sent out an email making clear that this mailer is not from the Democratic Party and that the party has nothing to do with it. I can't find an online version of the mailer (and I didn't get one), so I don't know exactly what it says or who it claims to be from, but the small version of it Yes on 87 has on their website makes it seem that the flyer looks like it's for Democrats and asks them to vote against the measure. As has been made abundantly clear in recent weeks, pretty much all major Democratic party leaders (former President Clinton first among them) support this measure. If you're looking for some non-partisan voting guides on Prop. 87 (at least, I am pretty sure they're party-free) check out this one, from the League of Women Voters, or a condensed version here, from Smartvoter.

I got that flier in my mail. I was a bit surprise but it didn't change my plan to vote yes on 87. Mostly because I am a member of at least one organization that supports it. Its not surprising that Big Oil would resort to these underhanded tactics, they have no moral scruples. They care only about one thing, money. This tax will fleece their profits which they hate. And it specifically prohibits them to pass it on to the consumer, which they hate even more. Its interesting to note that some states, including Texas, have such a tax already.
I wonder if they also hate the fact that the funds will go to alternative energy research?
