Biofuel tested in New York City power plant
A power plant in New York City ran on a biofuel blend for a few days of tests late last month in the largest use of biofuels on any single occasion in the United States, according to the New York Power Authority. The NYPA said that about 100,000 gallons of soybean fuel were blended with 900,000 gallons of No. 6 fuel oil in concentrations of five and then twenty percent. Reuters doesn't say what the results of the test are, but Peter Smith, president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, said that, "The Power Authority's biofuel test signals new possibilities for green-power production that could lead to additional revenues for the state's farmers and the construction of new bio-refineries," so it seems to have gone well enough. The plant was the Charles Poletti Power Project in Queens, a plant that usually operates using natural gas or heating oil. The biofuel test was the result of New York Gov. George Pataki's executive order last year that requires state agencies and public authorities to use more biofuels. it makes sense to test biofuels in Poletti, since the state will shut the plant down sometime before 2010.
Unrelated to green cars: how many of you are using Firefox 2.0? I just switched to it this week and am now slightly in awe of the predictive search box feature. For example, I typed in Poletti and it suggested "Poletti Power Plant", among other things. What doesn't Google know?
