New biodiesel study shows no increase in NOx emissions using B20

Contrary to a 2002 EPA study that showed a two percent increase in nitrogen oxide emissions when using B20, a new study by the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory showed no such increase. The lab tested three transit buses, two school buses, two Class 8 trucks, and one motor coach on a heavy duty chassis dynamometer for the study. They simulated both urban and highway driving on the dyno and measured the emissions.

The study found small increases on some vehicles while others had decreases depending on the engine design. This is where the new study differs from the previous EPA study which was based on tests of only a single engine model that happened to show an increase. The EPA made a general conclusion about the effect of B20 based on a single data point. Based on this more complete study it appears that B20 has no real impact on NOx emissions overall. Good thing they retested. The full report from the study can be found here.
