Hydrogen powered H-Racer named Time's "Invention of the Year"
Time magazine has named their inventions of the year for 2006 even though there's still more than a month to go on the calendar. In the transportation category, the winner is the H-Racer, the worlds smallest fuel cell powered car. The H-Racer is six inch long model car that has an electric motor powered by a real fuel cell. It also includes a solar powered hydrogen generating station. The hydrogen station has a water tank and generates hydrogen by electrolysis. The hydrogen storage cylinder in the car holds enough gas to power the car for about three minutes. If there isn't enough sun light to power the hydrogen generator, it can also run on 2 AA batteries. A fresh set of batteries can generate enough H2 to fill the tank in about 30 seconds. The kit is a really cool way to demonstrate electrolysis and fuel cells to a science class.
