2008 Smart ForTwo makes it's auto show debut in Bologna with special "edition limited one"

This week and running through December 17, 2006 the second generation Smart ForTwo is making its auto show debut at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy. To celebrate the launch of the new model, DaimlerChrysler is going to build run of 1,500 "edition limited one" models. The bodywork will be in an special pyrite grey metallic, with the safety cell frame underneath painted silver. Mechanically the car will be equipped with the mid-level 71 hp gas engine with a top speed of 90 mph. The interior is where it gets really special, with a cognac-brown "used-look" nappa leather. The cars are also well-equipped with automatic climate control, heated seats, tachometer and a smart radio (does that mean it only plays podcasts, and doesn't pick up any actual radio stations?). The new ForTwo will be available for pre-order in Europe beginning in mid-January 2007. The full press release and more photos are after the jump.

Special model for the market launch: smart fortwo "edition limited one" with individual and exclusive equipment
Stuttgart, Dec 05, 2006
smart will be offering an exclusive special model of the new smart fortwo to coincide with the market launch in April 2007: the "edition limited one" shows that, like its predecessor, exclusive equipment is available for the new smart fortwo and there are lots of opportunities for individualisation.
The "edition limited one" smart fortwo will be presented for the first time at the Bologna Motor Show (05 - 17 December 2006). At the same time this will be the world premiere for the new smart fortwo at a show. With more than 210,000 smart fortwo sold to date, Italy is the largest market for smart.
Unique: bodypanels in pyrite grey metallic
As the name says, this is a limited edition. Just 1,500 models of the smart fortwo "edition limited one" will be built. The special model is available as a coupé only. It has a silver tridion safety cell and bodypanels in exclusive pyrite grey metallic. The door mirror caps and radiator grille are also painted silver. Further exterior features include a panoramic roof with sun blind and 15 inch alloy wheels in a six-spoke design.
The smart fortwo "edition limited one" is powered by a 52 kW (71 bhp) petrol engine. The maximum speed is 145 km/h. The new automated five-speed manual transmission with the softouch automatic gear programme provides for even more comfort and lots of driving fun.

Exclusive leather trim: "Used look" nappa leather
In addition to the special pyrite grey exterior, exclusive features in the "edition limited one" include seats, gear knob and a three-spoke sports steering wheel (incl. steering wheel gearshift) in an elegant, cognac-brown used nappa leather look. The velour floor mats also have a leather trim.
The interior appointments of the smart fortwo "edition limited one" further include air conditioning with automatic temperature control (incl. dust and pollen filter), heated seats, a cockpit clock, rev counter and the smart radio 9.
Further features are a luggage compartment cover, a storage compartment in the tailgate and fabric elements on the instrument panel, door trim and knee pad.
The new smart fortwo: Ordering starts mid January
The new smart fortwo can do everything that the current model can do - but even better. This means that the new smart fortwo is even more comfortable, even more agile, even safer and even more environmentally friendly than its predecessor.
Like the other models, the smart fortwo "edition limited one" can be ordered from mid January 2007. The prices will be announced in good time. The starting price for the new smart fortwo will stay at the level of the predecessor model.

Why can't they make economical cars that I won't feel strange riding around in without my blue wig and big red nose?

I like the Smart but I doubt I would pay extra for leather that looks like vinyl out of a 1972 Ford Pinto.

Smart car is the coolest car in Europe. Unfortunately it will not work well in US. Have you seen the crash with a mercedez - in the end of video the car goes flying away 3 feet and spins at least 3 times upside down. Car looks fine but the person inside probably not so good as he is made of bone and flesh not steel. We need a car that doesn't act like a soccer ball in the US.

The crash comment shows typical American thinking. It doesnt matter what car your in when your up against something bigger. There will always be something bigger on the roads. Following that train of thought we will all be in cars the size of Semi trucks. My poor neighbor pulled out in front of a F350 crew cab that was doing sixty. Her Buick was punted 200 feet and landed up against a Pizza Hut.

Thats right James it is typicsl american thinking. What doesn't make sense is that they are making Green cars for Americans that can't take a hit. Soccer mom will rather have a range of 50 miles in an electric solid SUV with decent acceleration then 600 miles in a Smart. Why no companies are building electric SUVs is beyond me.

They did build electric SUVs--the RAV4. And no one cared. Story of the EV.

The average US consumer is tricked into thinking big cars are comfy and safe, while the president rakes in oil profits and kills eco-friendly fuel programs. Go ahead, circle the parking lot in your Hummer H2 (which has less legroom and headroom than a Mini Cooper, by the way) and I'll go get my high MPG Smart ForTwo, park it wherever I want, then leave your slow-moving unstable SUVs in the dust! Woo!

I would love it if Americans bought the sized car that they needed and then rented a truck for their trips, construction project etc..That will not happen in america with these tall suv bumpers that will run right through your side window in a side accident. We need to make small aerodynamic cars which are solid, full of green crumple zones and fuel efficient otherwise these mamas are going to run to the hummer dealer.
