Toyota Auris is one safe low-emission diesel car
The Europe-only Toyota Auris will be one of the safest cars on the road when it hits dealer showrooms in the beginning of February. The Auris was awarded 35 points (which gives it 5 stars, the highest-possible rating) by Euro NCAP for its nine (available) airbags and strong body structure. This is good news, because the Corolla-replacing Auris is a new diesel (and petrol) offering that meets all Euro IV emissions standards. If, after reading the recent depressing news that vehicles with a penchant for saving fuel fared incredibly poorly in recent crash test, you thought you needed to choose between a gas miser and a safe car, perhaps the Auris will prove you can have both. If you live in the UK, at least.

Last year I used the VW Gulf. This year Avis gave me an automatic Toyota Diesel Auris. I drove nearly 1000 miles in Europe. Diesel mileage was fantastic. Regular fuel was 1.47 Euros per liter. Diesel was between .88 in Luxembourg and 1.04 in Holland per liter. .
I got well over 40 miles per gallon. Last year I paid as much as 1.61 per liter in Holland. Keep in mind that the Euro last year was almost at the 1.60 as compared to the 1.36 today.
The car handled well. My wife and passenger both claimed the car was smaller and not as comfortable as the Gulf.
Thats my two cents. Joe

One should note that the current VW Golf V also gets five stars from the Euro NCAP (33 points) and is far more likely to be available in the USA with a diesel than the Toyota.

I'm a little confused - is the Auris the European Matrix? The Matrix is based on the Corolla here in the USA, so will we be getting a new Matrix as well as a new Corolla?
As an aside, I am truly looking forward to the US version of the Corolla in MY2008. I would particularly enjoy a 3-door hatchback hybrid, but failing that I wouldn't mind the diesel engine. Keeping in mind what sells in the American market, I speculate that Toyota will offer a petrol 4-door, petrol or hybrid 5-door, and a petrol 3-door hatchback. Checking out the UK site, I was schocked to see the mileage on the diesel 3-door Corolla - 58.9 MPG! But I agree with Jimmy in post #1 - a diesel for the USA is unlikely.

EnvEng: in England, they use the Imperial Gallon!! 58.9 is more like 49mpg American, still good though!
