Will using ethanol in your snow blower help the environment or hurt your engine?
If you live in a part of world that has a lot of snow on the ground right now, this story's for you. Especially if you like to clear snow out of the driveway the new-fashioned way: with a snow blower.
The Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC) says that small engines like those in snow blowers can burn E10 efficiently, and using ethanol instead of standard gasoline reduces greenhouse gas emissions by around 30 percent. And, of course, EPIC wants you to fire up your outdoor machines with any fuel that burns ethanol as often as possible.
The EPA does say that using any ethanol-gasoline blend up to E10 should be fine in off-road engines (snow blowers if you're working, snowmobiles if you're not), but let's not forget all of the problems boat owners had last year with E10 on the water.
And, of course, if you're really green and need to clear a driveway full of snow, grab a snow shovel. Or get the kids to do it.
