Tamminen and Grist, Part Deux
Terry Tamminen got beat up pretty bad following an expanded interview with David Roberts of Grist. AutoblogGreen readers also responded to Tamminen's views on hydrogen. Anyway, Roberts offered Tamminen a forum to respond to the comments. Tamminen didn't respond point by point but rather referred those with questions to his book. But he did bring up a point worth mentioning again, and that is that the environmental community continues to fight world problems divided. "We will need all technologies to displace oil in our lifetimes," responds Tamminen. "That's the goal, no whether one costs relatively more or less."[Source: David Roberts / Grist]

I think Terry’s heart is in the right place. He just needs to keep up with technology and quit worrying so much about leveraging his cousin, Arnold’s power for personal gain. If Terry believes in energy independence, then he should be championing the best technologies both for NOW, and in the future. Hydrogen will NEVER be as flexible, safe and efficient to produce and use as electricity. Hydrogen will ALWAYS be a terribly dangerous and explosive greenhouse gas. Hydrogen will ALWAYS be a wonderful terror target of opportunity.
Any reasonable person would agree that we should invest in the most direct (read efficient) way to gain PERSONAL and thus national energy independence as quickly, easily and cheaply as possible. That direction is Biofuels (not corn) and PHEVs now and ultimately BEVs and better public transportation (I like Monorails http://www.monorails.org/) in the future. GM’s highly flexible E-Flex series PHEV architecture is definitely the most simple and logical way to go. I only hope that GM is not using it as yet another red herring technology stall. Hydrogen is a fool’s errand.
There are new technologies under review. Take a look here for some very interesting reading. http://www.peswiki.com/index.php/Congress:Top_100_Technologies_--_RD

We definitely do NOT need hydrogen.

America doesn't have a long history which causes it to be so divided and uncaring. But Americans are the smartest and proactive people on the planet and they will not put up with this BS.
