We've grown used to warning labels on so many things in recent years that it's easy for our eyes to glance right over them (but there are still a few that make us scratch our heads). Since 1998, cars sold in California have carried a Smog Index Label that is "is intended to help consumers compare the smog forming emissions from different vehicles within that model year." A bill passed by California in 2005 requires this label to be updated by July 2007. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) must rename the sticker and have it provide specified emissions information about the car it's intended for.

To that end, CARB will be holding a workshop this week (Thursday morning at the Byron Sher Auditorium in Sacramento) to discuss the redesigned stickers. The new labels will appear on very new car sold in California by 2009. Click here for all the details on the workshop.

Connecticut also requires new cars to have a sticker that displays how much and how many greenhouse gases they emit, and other states are likely to follow suit.
