Auto Alliance declares this to be "National Alternative Fuel Autos Week"
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is a trade association made up of BMW Group, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, Porsche, Toyota and Volkswagen. If you take all the alternative fuel autos made by these companies (those autos defined by the Alliance as "hybrid electric, ethanol-capable E-85, and clean diesel"), you'll reach a total of more than 10.5 million. This news was released by the Alliance this week, to honor what it has declared to be "National Alternative Fuel Autos Week." From the 12th to the 16th, the Alliance is celebrating the first such week by noting 2006's banner year for alternative fuel auto sales (1.5 million).
Yes, the Alliance is strictly a PR organization. Yes, it's questionable that they claim E85 vehicles are "alternative fuel" vehicles when you can fill them up with dinojuice every time (but, this is the consumer's decision, not the manufacturers). And yes, the more choices we have, the better.

We at the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest will try any shameless promotion to keep FFV owners away from the dinojuice. Our latest example:
E85 Go Bragh!
Saint Paul, Minn. – (March 15, 2007) – In Irish folklore, a Leprechaun’s pot of gold could be found at the end of a rainbow. At the end of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Saint Paul, Minn., a display of the latest alternative fuel vehicles can be found parked in Rice Park, on Washington Street just across from the Ordway Theatre. Staff from the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest’s Clean Air Choice™ program will be on hand to answer questions about the pollution-reducing vehicles, and the greener fuels and engine technologies the vehicles use.
Among the vehicles on display will be the flexible fuel (meaning it can use cleaner-burning E85 or gasoline) GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon provided by Larry Reid’s Arrow Buick-Pontiac-GMC in Inver Grove Heights, the American Lung Association of Minnesota’s uniquely decorated Chevy Avalanche and Chevy Impala (also flex fuel vehicles), and the new Saturn Vue hybrid, on loan from Saturn of St. Paul in Mounds View.
“Everyone wears green on Saint Patrick’s Day, even Norwegians like me from north of the Iron Range,” said Tim Gerlach, regional vice president for clean fuels and vehicle technologies, American Lung Association. “We are showing people how we can all live green all year with fuels and engines that significantly reduce air pollution.”
Gerlach noted the Twin Cities has already been under one air pollution advisory in 2007, and air pollution problems will likely intensify as our highways become more crowded and the temperature outside warms. The Lung Association of the Upper Midwest and the private and public partners of the Minnesota E85 Team plan more educational displays at upcoming events this year including the Living Green Expo and the hugely popular “Eco Experience” exhibition during the Minnesota State Fair. The March 9 issue of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal featured a media campaign the nonprofit has already launched on television, radio and billboards.
The St. Patrick’s Day parade begins at noon at 4th & Sibley. For more on the alternative fuel vehicles, E85 and biodiesel, see www.CleanAirChoice.org
