New Peugeot 308 to offer diesel hybrid powertrain

The new C-Class Peugeot 308 will go on sale in early 2008 and AutoExpress is reporting that a diesel hybrid version will be available about six months later. The Focus sized 308 will have a 1.6L turbodiesel mated up to an electric motor and battery pack. There's no word on what kind of battery will be used, but start-stop capability and regenerative braking will be in place.
The four door, five seat 308 is expected to get a combined rating of 69.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 90g/km, putting it almost on par with the much smaller Smart ForTwo CDi. That would make it by the cleanest, most efficient car in it's class, and drivers in London wouldn't have to pay the congestion tax. The hybrid 308 will be able on run on battery alone up to 30 mph and would be the first diesel hybrid car to go into production.

For all these new hybrid cars to sell like hotcakes, manufacturers should bring the price down to the regular gas version levels. Other then that I don't see many people buying them especially if you keep a car only 2-4 years like leasing.

They'll sell like hotcakes when they put a standard 120/240v plug on them and enough battery for an electric-only range of at least 30 miles for in town running around. That's a game changer and would offer a hell of a lot of value to the customer and probably help jumpstart the PV biz, not that it needs jumpstarting any more.

1. Peugeot does not sell cars in the US. If they did they would sell like hotcakes at any price.
2. In the UK (their primary market) they won't be able to produce enough of these at any price. The city car tax is increasing and this should be exempt.
3. I want one now.

Peugeots are really durable.I've learnt that from experience.Roads in my country are typically known to be horrible.Peugeot cars went on to provide cars for that - rugged chassis and suspension.
Traffic jams also are rampant. You know what? There was a traffic hog lasing for hours on end in a really sunny afternoon on a really baa-aad bridge. Before clearing, most conventional brands had literarily packed up (no joke!)but the regular Peugeots in that jam survived the plague and were still bouncing (for more ?)!
So thumbs up!

Peugeots my love.
The best...
At least I remember an experience where all cars were breaking down and THAT peugeot 504 Station Wagon stood the durability test of engine runtime duration.
So peugeot-thumbs up!

In response to DPCcars, here in Europe, where you pay 6.30 - 7.00 dollars per US gallon for gas/petrol, you make up the difference pretty quickly if you're doing 15,000 - 20,000 miles a year.
