Montreal joins biodiesel and hybrid bus movement
The transit system in Montreal is about to hop on the biodiesel bandwagon to reduce their environmental impact. By the fall of 2008 the transition from petroleum to biodiesel should be complete. The existing engines will not require any modifications and maintenance costs should actually be reduced, thanks to the cleansing effects of biodiesel. Spokesman Luc Tremblay said the switch would have a carbon effect equivelant to getting 1,400 cars off the streets of the French-Canadian city. The transit system will also begin testing eight hybrid buses on certain city routes to evaluate their performance.

sweet! I remember when i first read about the proposed hybrid pilot project in the Montreal Gazette, and that was maybe even 3 years ago. I met Luc Tremblay once on Car Free Day 2005 by coincidence when I was asking about the hybrid project after not hearing anything for a while. He told me they were waiting for funding. He actually just presided over my engineering graduate ceremony two weeks ago, and now we're finally hearing the good news. Too bad I'm probably gonna have left Montreal by the time those buses hit the road next winter.
