Toyota starts offering $2,000 incentives on Prius to counter dwindling tax breaks

Toyota sold a bunch of Prius hybrids last month but now the company is offering $2,000 in discounts at the dealership. The move comes on the heels of fewer tax credits available to Prius shoppers. The discounts range from $600 to $2,000 for features such a navigation, hands-free mobile phone connection and rear-view cameras. Toyota earlier offered low-cost lease options and no-interest financing packages. The automaker is looking to boost Prius sales 64 percent this year with a goal of 175,000 units.
Toyota sold 19,156 Priuses in March. That's up from 7,922 sold in March 2006. The federal tax credit for the Prius dropped in half to $1,575 last year and is now down to $787. The federal credits run out after October 1.

The incentives are the only reason that I am even looking at this car. Before I really love the idea of what it did, but to tell the truth I didnt like the design. After I heard about the incentive is when I decided it might not be so bad to own one.

I think this is a great idea. Without those government tax incentives, it doesn't really pay for consumers to buy a Prius. The amount you save in gas over the car's life doesn't make up for your initial investment.

Why is it that disinformation keeps being spewed about hybrids over and over again? (maybe they're just jealous). That myth was busted by a 2007 Intellichoice study, which showed it pays to own hybrids, especially the Prius (with or without incentives). Read it and weep while filling up your gas guzzler again.
But in spite of those hybrid haters continuing to spew hot air (like that idiotic Hummer/Hybrid propaganda "study"), the Prius just smashed its sales record in March with sales over 19000. That should put it in the top 10 of all vehicles sold in the US. The incentives on the Prius are pretty standard by industry standards, by the way. You can get much larger incentives on many gas guzzlers.
