VW Polo BlueMotion at the New York Auto Show

The Polo BlueMotion as we found it on Thursday
Volkswagen's miserly Polo BlueMotion was a nominee for the 2007 World Green Car of the Year award presented during the press days at the New York Auto Show. As it happened, we stumbled across the little 60 MPG hatchback during a foray out onto the show floor late Thursday afternoon. When we found the car, it was hidden under cover parked against a wall in the basement level, around 50 feet away from the Volkswagen stand. Several readers commented (or emailed) on our original post at Autoblog, saying that the BlueMotion is now on full display with the rest of its kin in the VW area. Talk about a tease. Queries about when and where potential customers will be able to buy one of the cars are sure to result in disappointment, as the Polo is not available on these shores. That, dear friends, is what's called a bummer.

Mind telling me where to write to so that VWoA would pay attention, Ralph? My experience and that of everyone I've ever talked to is that VWoA is deaf as a post to this sort of communication and blind as a bat to the emerging markets here...imagine spending all that money developing a SUV to arrive TaaDah just as the SUV craze is dead and to have ignored the pocket rocket potential of Polo and Lupo...meanwhile the Mini, a much lesser car, has been a runaway barn-burning success here.
VW stumbles along ears and eyes closed. If their engineering didn't turn out such good products, their sales and management would have killed the company long ago.

This is one VW I'd purchase in a heartbeat if available in the USA. If enough people express interest in a vehicle the car companies will take notice. VW responded to journalist and enthusiast letters to bring over the european Golf R32 in limited numbers to the US, so they could be persuaded that the time is right for this car, too. Contact VW of America and send them a note!
