Supreme Court's CO2 emissions decision sets the stage for political fight
Automotive News has a detailed article out today on the political battle it says is coming over CO2 emission rules and what some of the big questions are in the light of the ruling. If you have a subscription, I recommend reading the full thing. If you don't here's a brief run-down.After the big U.S. Supreme Court ruling last week that the EPA can now regulate auto emissions of gases (like CO2), the question is, "Where do we go from here?" AN says the ruling "was a major defeat for the auto industry, which now faces regulations that will make many vehicles smaller, more fuel efficient, less powerful -- and potentially less profitable."
So, the upcoming fight is over just how strict the new EPA rules will be, and when they'll be put in place. Will industry-friendly legislators push new rules through before 2009 and a potential Democratic president, who might want emissions limits lowered, comes into power? Will the ruling be based on capping and trading emissions? Just how big of a big role will auto-industry-friendly Rep. John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat, the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, play?

I think this entire site is about our concern for the planet. This particular post details a specific fight that's brewing. But I take your point.
