Ford recalls 527,000 Escapes, hybrid versions not part of the problem
The bad news: Ford is recalling Escape SUVs again. The good news: If you have the hybrid version, like all those taxi drivers in NYC, or a new Escape, your SUV is fine.
Ford announced yesterday that the company will recall about 527,000 Escape crossovers (2001-2004 model years) because of a safety hazard in the antilock brake system where water and contaminants might enter and cause corrosion. This corrosion might turn on the ABS warning light and melt or cause smoking in the electrical ABS connector. Ford says no accidents or injuries have been reported because of this problem.
While you're thinking about how smart you are for getting a hybrid Escape, here's pictures of the 2008 Escape hybrid when it was launched in January.

Does anyone know anything about this?
My 2006 Ford Escape hybrid's heater emits a weird, perfume-like odor when the heater is on, which I'm concerned
could indicate that toxins are being blown into the passenger compartment.
The dealer insists it's new car smell--NOT--because new car smell is all around the cabin, all the time, not just from the heater when it's on. Also, new car smell dissipates after awhile and this car is over a year old and the smell is as strong as ever. It's a sweet smell (the Service Manager even said it's like "grape Pixy Stix" but the dealer won't acknowledge that comment).
Ford Motor Company also says it's new car smell but neither they nor the dealer will put any of their assurances in writing.
It's been a cold winter in this car because I won't use the heater. What a reward for being green and buying a hybrid!
