Going to work after Earth Day - leave home without it

The Capital Area Transportation Authority here in Lansing, MI recently sent out a brochure in time for Earth Day suggesting people try to commute to work for one day without using their car. Leaving home without it, as it were. The brochure doesn't ask people to drop the car on April 23rd (the target date is May 3rd), the idea is a good one: for one day, think about alternatives (suggestions include riding the bus, biking, walking, and carpooling). Now that spring has come and traveling to work in the elements actually sounds pleasurable, I can see this campaign working, at least for some people.
Has your local government sent something similar to you? Are there any efforts that are happening on a very local level that don't get mentioned in the larger media universe very often you'd like to share? Sure, Earth Day gets a lot of media attention, but the attitude that is adopted on this day can and should be spread around a bit. Leave home without it tomorrow, then try to leave it once a month, then once a week, etc.

Great idea and since it's nice out some of those alternatives are becoming nicer to do. The Cata bus bus picks me up in the winter and takes me right onto Michigan States campus but now that it's warm I have switched over to riding my bike. Every few days while I was riding the bus one of the hybrid buses would be running my route and they are very nice to ride on less vibration and noise when accelerating. I hope Cata gets more hybrids they are really nice when your walking and one takes off near you it's so much quieter and you don't smell the fumes compared to other buses everyone should demand the switch to hybrid buses. Go Green!
