Rep. Pete Stark introduces Carbon Tax bill
California congressman Pete Stark has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives HR 2069 that would establish a carbon tax on fossil fuels. The Save Our Climate Act would add a tax of $10 per ton of carbon in the fuel at the time that is either imported or extracted from the ground. The bill would require the IRS and Department of Energy to issue an annual report on carbon dioxide emissions. The initial $10 would be increased by an additional $10 per year every year until CO2 emissions have been reduced by eighty percent from 1990 levels.
Assuming approximately 5.2 lbs of carbon per gallon of gasoline, the initial $10 tax would amount to about 2.6 cents per gallon but that would increase fairly rapidly.

80% less than 1990 levels of CO2? that's pretty low! I think it'll take a very long time until CO2 goes down that much. By then the taz will have become to large.

More gas taxes are by far the best thing this country could use. You could complain that it would hit the low income individual (or families) the hardest, but typically, the cheaper the car, the better its mileage is in many cases. Economy cars tend to be economical both on initial costs and continued costs. It would just force consumers to demand cars with better mileage, hence voting with thier pocketbooks and motivating manufacturers to produce more economical cars.
Now the question is... Where is that tax money going? To fund new technologies, or to fund more pork? If you ask me the ONLY thing it should be funding is alternative fuels AND public transportation!

Gee, another moronic proposal from a guy who is worth millions of dollars. I will try to act surprised that Pete's tax proposal will hit low income people the hardest.
We are swimming in oil, but we seem more inclined to shoot ourselves in the foot immediately instead of using some semblance of common sense to deal with the problems of imported oil, global warming not being caused by human activity, and our unwillingness to to remain a strong country.
