More on green cars from The Union of Concerned Scientists

I imagine that if you were to ask just about anybody on the street what car manufacturers they think of when you say green cars, the answer would most often be Toyota. Honda would be my guess as the second most often heard manufacturer. That could change if GM does in fact produce the Volt, or maybe not if Honda produces their new hybrid and Toyota continues to refine their Prius. I don't imagine that Honda or Toyota are just waiting for competition from other companies either. Well, if I am right about people's perceptions regarding Honda and Toyota, they are backed up by The Union of Concerned Scientists. As we have mentioned before, Honda has won the award of the greenest manufacturer of automobiles a few years running now. According to Treehugger, the award is not just based on their fleets of vehicles, but on all of their manufacturing facilities and overall practices.

Unless the Volt comes in at $20k this is a moot subject. How can 1 car overcome the several at both Toyota and Honda? Especially if it's more expensive? How does 1 car make a company greener than companies with entire line getting 30+ mpg? Ridiculous.

despite being happy overall with the Union of Concerned Scientists, I am disappointed with them over one thing: they have created a design they call the Vanguard, which is just another Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicle with lots of extra hardware to give it marginally better mileage but even more ways for it to break down.
When I have tried to initiate any dialog at UCS in an effort to support EVs instead, or at least give them equal support... EVs that only have one moving part, give far better mileage, produce no pollution at all and need far less maintenance... I get no response from anyone, not even an automated response. It makes me wonder what their real objectives are. I don't want to argue with them-- I simply want a reasonable agenda.

Bill,
I understand your position but think about it this way.
UCS is trying to get something going that can be done with existing cheap tech. Something that can be installed on every ICE vehicle being made. They are looking for what the Auto Industry would find easiest to swallow with max. benefit, about 45% less pollution than current vehicles and minimal additinal costs. Vanguard does just that.
