Diesels purring quietly, plotting their upcoming expansion in the American market
None of the diesels that will be sold in the near future in America will be able to go 300+ mph like the Dieselmax that Ricardo helped to build last year, but the company is still predicting that soon (that is, by 2012) Americans will buy 1.5 million diesel vehicles a year. The factors leading to this move are upcoming higher fuel economy standards, cheaper cost of diesels vs. hybrids, and emissions standards-meeting clean diesel. This prediction comes in a report called "Is Diesel set to boom in the US?" that Ricardo is releasing with UBS. Combined diesel and hybrid sales should reach 2.7 million units, the report says. So, do the math, that means they think diesel sales will be higher than hybrid sales. Compared to the whole market, the two forecast that combined diesel and hybrid gasoline will make up 15 percent of the U.S. light vehicle market by 2012.Related:

In mid-2008 Volkswagen will have the Jetta with a 50 state common rail diesel 140HP 2 liter 4 cyl (no urea injection). This engine should be available in the Rabbit and Beetle and maybe even the Passat not too long after. BMW is talking the X5 and maybe a 5 series sedan. There is talk of a C-class Mercedes late '08 or '09. Of course Honda and Subaru are expected '09 or 2010.

BMW made the official announcement that in 2008 the 3 liter inline 6 cyl. turbodiesel will be available "across their model lineup." They hint that it will be the twin-turbo 286HP/420ft-lb torque mill. I am eagerly awaiting a 3-series coupe with this engine. 0-60 in around 6 seconds, 40MPG on the highway. Now we're talkin'! What's not to love?

Blue tech Mercedes E class, & Jeep grand Cherokee are the other two available. But why not the 300C? Why not a diesel dodge charger & patrol charger? Why not all the VW 2.0L crd/TDI caliber, compass, patriot, avenger, sebring?

Hyundia is also talking about brining diesels to their line up but has not yet said which of their car will get what engine! It looks like they have the engines in europe but need the pollution contols to make it work in the USA.
