GM VP Tom Stephens talks ethanol; how it can help prevent wars

GM's group vice president for Global Powertrain and Quality, Tom Stephens, spoke yesterday at the US BioEnergy ethanol plant in Woodbury, Michigan. Earlier, we brought you a video of some folks from US BioEnergy on how the plant and company operate. Now, here's GM's view on how to use all that ethanol. Stephens cites the two biggies - energy independence and less CO2 released into the air - as reasons GM is supporting ethanol so much (see, for example, this post and this one), but he makes it clear that hybrid/PHEVs and then EVs and hydrogen vehicles are the way of the future.
Give Tom a listen here.

"he makes it clear that hybrid/PHEVs and then EVs and hydrogen vehicles are the way of the future."
Ahh...He is beginning to lean toward electricity as the fuel of the future.

Trust an Oil company to trumpet hydrogen.

Hydrogen is a fraud pushed on us by Oil and Car companies.

Electricity is and always will be better than Hydrogen.
You can't engineer your way around the laws of physics.

Greyflcn, or shoud I say Greydodo???
Why on Earth would you say that hydrogen is pushed on us by oil and car companies? Why would oil companies want us to move away from, well, oil? Why would automanufacturers spend BILLIONS of dollars on the technology if they didn't see promise in it? They are not engineering their way around physics. Heck, you probably couldn't engineer your way out of a wet paper bag. This stuff actually works. Didin't you see the GM Sequel test? Ford? Honda? They all have test fleets. The biggest issue is supply and infrastructure and making hydrogen from sources other than carbon based. I agree with you that electricity is better but we need to find a better way to harness it rather than plugging it into our carbon spewing wall outlet.

Tim, big oil is pushing hydrogen because it take a lot of energy to produce it. Right now the cheapest way is from natural gas, which is controlled by the oil companies.

I don't know about the previous Tim, but this one is not so easily fooled by the energy pushers who wish us to substitute one fossil fuel addiction known as oil, for another fossil fuel addiction known as Hydrogen.
Why do I say Hydrogen is a fossil fuel you ask? Well, because it is most economically produced from another product the pusher's control. Hydrogen can be reformed from "natural" gas at 25% of the cost of electrolyzing it from water, that's why. http://www.oilcrash.com/articles/h_scam.htm
The oil company drug dealers and their crack pipe manufacturers known as big auto also are enjoying the HUGE windfall profits and our tax money “research grants” they paid our/their “representatives” in congress for. You know, it’s called campaign contributions now and high paid lobbing jobs when they leave congress.
In reality, Big Oil and Big Auto are simply using a military tactic known as “diversion” to stall us from kicking the addiction to their products. Cellosic ethanol… some day? EVs… some day? Economical solar… some day? Hydrogen… some day? Clean Nuclear… some day? Clean diesels in the US… some day? PHEVs… some day?
Get rid of oil… not until we can stall no longer or addict you to Hydrogen!
Anybody who really swallows their crap is a fool. The rest will buy EVs from somebody else. Probably the Chinese. American auto’s will stall until it’s too late. Big Oil and Big Auto are only worried about profits today, not life tomorrow.
