House Democrats say they'll push for new CAFE laws "soon"

Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives said today that they would make sure to pass a fuel economy standards bill "soon." There had been rumors the House would push debate back until fall. Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass) said to the Energy and Commerce Committee that, "We will pass a fuel economy standard soon, just as the Senate has done. We have reached a historic moment." More on Markey's statement here.

John Dingell (D-MI), committee chair and friend of the auto industry, has, according to Reuters, "crafted a narrow bill as he tries to build support for climate change legislation in the fall." This makes a lot of Dems support the bill, and gave Republicans a chance to call it weak. As in the Senate, debate is coming up as part of a larger energy bill, so there talk of more efficient lightbulbs among the talk of establishing grants for biofuels, advanced batteries and PHEVs. The actual bill is a long way off, but it seems we're going to be hearing more sooner rather than later.
