Governor Kulongoski of Oregon to sign biofuels bill

Now here's some forward thinking. Instead of taking the route many states have and focusing on the immediate and obvious problem of fuel efficiency, Ted Kulongoski (my condolences on your name, man), Governor of Oregon, is taking productive action and signing the Biofuel Bill, as it hath been dubbed, at a SeQuential Biofuels station in Eugene, Oregon (that's pronounced Or-e-gun - the locals are real particular about that). The bill doles out tax breaks to farmers and foresters (not the Subaru) that send their raw materials to biofuel processing plants. It also requires 10 percent (based on availability from the state) ethanol added to all on-road gasoline sold (hopefully no problems there), and two pecent biodiesel added to on-road diesel. It also boosts the state's economy, and paves the way for new jobs. Gee, Bullwinkle, that sounds swell. And now for something you'll really like.
The SeQuential station - the setting of this back-patting, hand-shaking and John Hancocking shindig - is noteworthy in and of itself because it's solar powered, netting 33.6 KW from a solar canopy. It just gets greener, doesn't it? Not only that, but it captures water runoff, filters it, and supplements the utility supply from the city. This warm, fuzzy green feeling brought to you in part by Ted

I hope those tax breaks don't go to ADM, ConAgra or other giant corporate farms as just more taxpayer funded corporate welfare.

I agree that those Finnish names aren't easy to pronounce here in U.S. This Kulongoski was originally in Finland written as Kulonkoski.
You Shane can have condolences for my last name too which happens to be Haikonen (another Finnish last name). Try to pronounce that one correctly !
By the way I don't have any problem to pronounce Kulongoski correctly, because I am originally from Finland ;o)

wow, dude, speak for yourself! Ted Taxngougeme has NOT been a good governor at all! If he was, we wouldn't be in the financial mess we are in. He stands for all things bad for job creation and capitalism.

It's "Or - ih - gun".
:)
And the law is pretty good about making sure supply comes from Oregon, and is more sustainable. No foreign palm-oil allowed. :)
It also gives tax credits to people who purchase 100% biofuel. 50 cents a gallon up to 200 dollars per year.
The City of Portland as of July 1 has B5 biodiesel in every diesel pump within city limits. Also with pretty good requirements about where the fuel comes from and how it is made.
In my opinion they are doing a good job of balancing the environmental benefits of biofuel with the obvious environmental risks. And a big set of issues are economic stability, energy independence, and sustainability. It just makes sense to produce fuel locally.
First steps.
Oh, and we have a lot of places like the SeQuential station, we a re pretty "green" here in Oregon.
