Ford retrofitting Dutch diesels with free particulate filters
Our readers know already how much Europeans love their diesels - they offer the same performance with higher mpg. However, although diesel engines are quite economical and have lower CO2 tailpipe emissions, there are concerns about other pollutants that they produce. One solution is installing a particulate filter.
The Dutch government has announced a subsidy of 500 EUR to retrofit these filters in diesel cars that didn't make it out of the factory with it, as long as they meet the Euro I to IV specifications.
As a consequence, Ford has announced that they will install the particulate filters for that price, making the the retrofit completely free. All new diesel models will be sold with particulate filters (which are either an extra option or only installed in upper versions).
This offer will be valid as long as the Dutch government maintains this subsidy.

Interesting. A recent discussion on TDIClub talked about this possibility for 2006 and earlier VW TDIs in the U.S., but the thread ended as it appeared that retrofit costs were most likely in the range of many thousands of dollars (perhaps tens of thousands): http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=181379
