Volvo C70 to get turbo-diesel

Volvo is adding a four cylinder engine to the C70 coupe lineup this fall. The 2.0L turbo-diesel puts out 136hp and 236lb-ft of torque and gets 38.6mpg on the EU combined cycle. The engine has a particulate filter as standard equipment to meet the Euro IV emissions requirements. While the C70 gets good fuel economy in Europe, we probably won't get it in the US. The diesel is expected to account for about ten percent of C70 sales globally and twenty percent in Europe. The C70 diesel goes on sale this fall.

Four-cylinder turbodiesel in the Volvo C70 engine range

The Volvo Car Corporation is extending the engine range in the Volvo C70 with a 2-litre turbodiesel - making this the first four-cylinder engine in the convertible.

"The four-cylinder turbodiesel will be a very popular choice, especially in Europe where it will account for 20 percent of total C70 sales. The engine offers a very attractive combination of fuel economy and driving pleasure," says Fredrik Arp, President and CEO of the Volvo Car Corporation.

Volvo Cars expects sales of the Volvo C70 2.0D to reach about 2,000 units a year - which means that one out of ten C70s sold worldwide will have the four-cylinder turbodiesel. The first cars will reach the showrooms during autumn 2007.

Second-generation common rail

The four-cylinder turbodiesel has a power output of 136 hp (100kW) and 320 Nm of torque. It delivers rapid throttle response and well-balanced sensitivity to the accelerator, offering the driver good control and generous driving pleasure.

The C70 2.0D has a fuel consumption of 6.1 l/100 km (EU combined). Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 11.0 sec and top speed is 205 km/h.

The engine features second-generation common rail technology with moving rails - the same as in Volvo's larger diesel models. The cylinder head is made of aluminium.

Particulate filter as standard

A Diesel Particulate Filter is standard. This filter significantly reduces unburned soot particles in the exhaust gases, thereby cutting the negative environmental impact. The system is cleaned (regenerated) automatically as the contents of the filter are burned off at regular intervals.
