H-Racer - the hydrogen toy - named Consumer Silver Award Winner
The toy we've featured more than any other on AutoblogGreen (as far as I can remember) is the H-Racer, a hydrogen-powered car. Looks like we're not the only ones paying attention. The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and BusinessWeek have named the H-Racer and the compatible Hydrogen Station Set, made by Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, the Consumer Silver Award Winner in the 2007 International Design Excellence Awards. There were 81 winners out of 1691 entries.
The H-Racer won because of "its environmentally sustainable, renewable energy hydrogen fuel cell design- providing consumers with a glimpse into the future of clean hydrogen power transportation." And because it's cool. Expensive, but cool.

It is terrible. It goes 100 feet in a straight line!!!..............Wow...

With its high price, short driving range, and modest performance, it is a great way to teach kids exactly why H2 is a lousy automotive fuel.
There were many items nominated for this international design award competition, including several that involve transportation and/or environmental issues. The Tesla Roadster won Gold in this competition, in the transportation division.

I found it appropriate that the winning hydrogen car was a toy, while the winning electric car was a full size vehicle.

I think for the money, it should have the features of any other remote controlled car, although I think the point of it is to get young people more curious about Fuel Cell technology, instead of just being a miniature bumper car. I can only see this toy as a good idea, since it provokes interest and curiosity in Hydrogen as a future power carrier. Perhaps a kid who played with this toy when they were young will someday invent a better mousetrap for the World. At the very minimum, a toy like this could get the kids away from the XBOX for awhile too.
