If you are renting a car in California, Avis is now making a new option available in the form of the Nissan Altima Hybrid. Avis has already been offering the Toyota Prius for some time at locations on the west coast and in Washington DC. The Altima provides customers the option of a larger sedan with a hybrid powertrain. The Avis press release is still quoting the 2007 EPA mileage figures of 42/36mpg rather than the new 2008 values of 35/33 which are a lot closer to the 32.4 mpg ABG got in our recent review.

AVIS EXPANDS 'COOL CAR' COLLECTION TO OFFER CHOICE OF HYBRID VEHICLES RESERVABLE BY MAKE AND MODEL

Environment-Friendly Vehicles Available at West Coast
and Washington, D.C. Locations

Coming Soon to Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New York and Philadelphia

Avis Rent A Car System, LLC announced today that it will add 500 Nissan Altima Hybrid vehicles to its U.S. fleet, available at select locations. The new addition gives customers a choice when renting a gas/electric hybrid vehicle, with the option of selecting either the Toyota Prius, a compact hybrid vehicle, or the Nissan Altima, a full-size hybrid vehicle for those desiring more room. Avis added 1,000 Toyota Priuses to its rental fleet earlier this summer.

The Altima Hybrid features a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine, fuel economy estimated at 42 miles per gallon (city) / 36 miles per gallon (highway) and an "Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle" rating. Standard features include push-button start, cruise control, keyless entry, power door locks and windows and dual zone automatic temperature control.

The Nissan Altima Hybrid will be available at Avis locations throughout California. The Toyota Prius is available at locations in California, Portland, Ore., Seattle and Washington, D.C. The Toyota Prius hybrid will also be available in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New York City and Philadelphia by the end of the year. Both the Nissan Altima Hybrid and the Toyota Prius are available with guaranteed reservations.

"These vehicles fulfill a variety of customer needs and desires," said Becky Alseth, senior vice president of marketing for Avis Budget Group, Inc., parent of Avis. "In addition to consumers who wish to make their rental experience one with minimal environmental impact, we expect a substantial number of customers are thinking of purchasing a hybrid vehicle, and want to try the Nissan Altima or Toyota Prius for themselves to see how it performs."

The addition of hybrid vehicles further diversifies the Avis fleet, which includes over 100 different makes and models offered in an expanded variety of car classes. More than 50 percent of vehicles in the Avis fleet achieve an EPA highway fuel efficiency rating of 28 miles or more per gallon. Avis also offers flex fuel cars for rent for those seeking to minimize environmental impact through the use of E-85 ethanol fuel. E-85 ethanol, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, is a mostly renewable fuel that can be made from corn, and which reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Avis recently introduced the Avis "Cool Cars" Collection, a series of sought-after vehicles which can be specifically reserved by make and model. In addition to the Nissan Altima Hybrid and the Toyota Prius, cars currently available in the collection include the Cadillac CTS, Hummer H3, Lincoln MKX, and Chrysler Crossfire.

"More than half of Avis renters say that they'd like to rent an Avis Cool Car given the right circumstances on any given rental occasion, but they want to know in advance exactly what model they are reserving," said Alseth. "All of our Avis Cool Cars can now be specifically reserved by individual make and model, and if that's the car you reserve, that's the car you will get. We look forward to adding more exciting and exotic vehicles to the Avis Cool Cars collection in the coming months."
