Plugin hybrid TV ad by a power company

AutoblogGreen wrote about the Plugin hybrid vehicle trials the power company Edison International plans with Ford. Seems Edison likes plugin hybrids so much they are singing their praises in TV ads. Last night, I caught a 30 second spot by Edison while watching Larry King interview the Vice President. The ad prominently features plugin hybrids and their benefits.
The commercial has Earth rolling by big text; Renewables, Clean Coal and Plug-In Hybrids. There is a white background and boxes with video like a lady in a pink blouse plugging in a car. Throughout there is a voice over that says "Small planet. Big challenges and a future that rests on our thinking about energy in new and better ways. Like the wider use of cost effective renewables. Clean coal technologies to transform a plentiful American resource into a greener energy source and plugin hybrid electric vehicles working as powerful engines for change. All aimed at making the electricity we use more cost efficient and environmentally sound. Edison International. Life powered by Edison."
This is probably the first time plugin hybrids have turned up in a commercial for a power company. It's great to see them high on the list of solutions. Plugin hybrids have the potential to be a great contributer to a cleaner energy future and it's about time someone said it.

my only question is, how do you make coal mining green?

Nice that they are promoting technology you can not buy.

And I'm sure Cheney (who was being interviewed when you saw this) would approve. Right...

I agree with Mike. Coal is the worst possible energy source.
I can't help but think that leaving coal in the ground is the most cost effective method of carbon sequestration possible.

There is NOTHING green about burning coal I'm glad to see that other people know that. What do you expect from the elecrtic companies? You buy electricity from them and they make money. It stands to reason they will "support" anything electric because it increases their sales/profits. Let's put the electric industry under the same gun as the auto industry ie more KWHs of electricity and less fuel consumption and see if they match the improvements in the auto industry.

LIGHT HYDROGEN FUEL CELLED AUTOMOBILES REQUIRE CLEAN, SAFE, AND CHEAP ENERGY FOR THEE ELECTROLYSIS OF H20 (WATER). CONTROLLED THERMONUCLEAR FUSION REACTORS SHALL PROVIDE THIS CLEAN, SAFE, AND CHEAP ENERGY. .... .

Gary Mike Colasuono, you are obviously new here, so let me give you some advice. First, don't type your post in ALL CAPS, it is like "shouting", it doesn't make your post any more impressive, but it does mark you as a clueless newbie.
Second, there is little support for H2 fuel cells here, as fuel cells are expensive, H2 has major storage problems, and it is inefficient. Electrolysis is only 60% efficient, PEM fuel cells only 50%, overall just 30% - less when you subtract energy for compression or liquifaction. Compare that with 85% efficiency of charger and batteries, and it's clear which is the most efficient option. Also, there are no "thermonuclear reactors" that produce any power, all take far more energy to run than they can produce.
Finally, it is best to avoid "off topic" politics on this site. There are a suprising number of "conserving conservatives" here, and bringing up any political subject not directly involved in efficient green transport may trigger a little verbal flaming.

"THERMONUCLEAR FUSION REACTORS SHALL PROVIDE THIS CLEAN, SAFE, AND CHEAP ENERGY"
Yeah, right. That's what they've been saying for 50 years, and they're no closer now than they were then. Don't insult our intelligence.
