Tesla battery pack passes UN safety test for delivery in passenger cars

Tesla Motors has passed another milestone on the way to Job 1 for their Roadster. The battery pack (or Energy Storage System as Tesla likes to refer to it) has passed the UN and UL 1642 testing criteria. The tests evaluate several areas include shock and vibration, altitude simulation external shorts and temperature cycling to ensure that the pack is safe for both transportation and use. The batteries have been extensively tested on both an individual cell basis and as an integrated pack. Tesla is still on track to begin production in early October and customer deliveries a few weeks after that.

I would be happy to see a good percentage of Americans driving Tesla Motors electric cars in about 20 years.
Wonder if the rest of the industry with their huge research facilities will ever get it?

Tesla Motors just keeps on doing things right. No wonder GM got so worried at the Tesla Roadster introduction, that they rushed out the concept Volt!

Tesla has set itself up in the -perfect- position between the electronics, automotive and emerging electric vehicles markets. With their 'catalyst' position between electronics and automotives, we'll be seeing their innovation being sold off to other automotive companies, money (incentive!!!) going to battery manufacturers to produce lighter cheaper more efficient batteries, to be later put into future models being pumped out by Tesla using the money earned by selling technologies.
Tesla is the new player in a poker match of oil and automotive champions, and they've got the royal flush. I can only hope (prey) that the support of big electronics manufacturers and righteous politicians will give them the courage to keep on their game face and take it all from the pool.
Maybe when this is all said and done, Musk will grant us the month-long "year-end" like Ford did with the weekly planner. Maybe I'm just dreaming :)...
