Frankfurt Preview: VW CEO Winterkorn confirms two versions of City Expert
Back in April after reports first surfaced about Volkswagen developing a new entry level high efficiency model, there was another rumor that there would be two different versions of the car. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn has now confirmed that the City Expert will indeed follow in the footsteps of the original Bug with an engine in the back end of the car. Winterkorn also confirmed that there will be two variations with the higher priced 8,000 Euro model targeted at Western Europe and a cheaper 5,000 to 7,000 Euro model for developing markets. The cheaper version may get branded as a Skoda instead of a VW.

good idea to have the cheaper model for developing markets with less safety features mandatory branded as a Skoda - though Skoda cars are very good - now.
Less safety features saves costs - and mean in the markets and countries intended the difference between affording a car or a motor scooter, tuk-tuk 2 stroke - or a light motorcycle - and in the two wheelers there is really no safety nor monsoon protection. Cinquecento is believed to also offer for a cheaper market a 2 cyl engine - but in-line this is hard to do for acceptable power, torque and smoothness. It could suffice for the 3rd. world - its best way of travelling on 4 wheels. Hope City Expert goes ahead and sells in Australia. Would like one as extra car - a runabout.
