Frankfurt Preview: VW's up! concept revealed
We knew the name, the fact that it's rear-engined and now, finally, we know what it looks like. I'm talking about Volkswagen's up! concept, which was unveiled today as we get ready for its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this week. I can tell some of you will be happy that the official version is nothing like the mockups that were floating around recently. As we said this morning, the up! (OK, we didn't know about the exclamation point then) should go into production in the next few years. Drive.au is also saying that the VW up! might be part of the line ups from Seat and Skoda brands to spread around costs.

it's funny how older prototypes are recycled and return to light year latter.
This neweest VW proto looks to me the rounded 2007 version of 1982 Student, doesn't it? (http://www.ltv-vwc.org.uk/wheelspin/WS_feb_2003/WnW-prototypes03.htm)

This doesn't appear to have the engine in the rear as was rumored. IMHO, that's a good thing, for a car this size there's really no good reason not to put the engine in front.
A big issue will be if the rear seats fold down completely and easily. A flat cargo surface, preferably will some anchor points to tie things down, would increase utility by quite a bit.

A rear engine layout avoids the necessity for power steering and a central tunnel for exhaust pipe, as well as allowing optimized front crash structure and potentially improved driving dynamics.
