Honda brings new Accord Tourer, and clean i-DTEC engine to Frankfurt

Honda's contribution to the flurry of Frankfurt news is twofold: the Accord Tourer Concept and a new generation diesel engines called i-DTEC.
If you like what you see in the picture above and after the jump, imagine it in your driveway, kind of. Honda says the Accord Tourer "provides a strong indication of the design direction of the all-new generation Accord Tourer set to debut in mid-2008." When that Tourer is available, the full line will be feature Euro V-compliant engines, courtesy of two i-VTEC petrol engines with 2.0 and 2.4-liter capacities and the new 2.2-liter i-DTEC diesel. Keep an eye out for the new Accord (Sedan and Tourer) at next year's Geneva motor show.
Now, about that diesel engine. Honda has or is testing it to meet strict emissions rules in Europe, Japan and the U.S., which implies global availability, pretty much, somewhere down the line. On top of the Euro V test, which the iDTEC passed, Honda is shooting for an EPA rating of Tier II/Bin 5, which surpasses even the upcoming Euro VI ratings. You can see a picture of the I-DTEC, more shots of the Tourer Concept and Honda's press release after the jump.

Honda Presents The Accord Tourer Concept and i-DTEC, The Next-Generation Clean Diesel Engine Technology, At The Frankfurt Motor Show
September 11, 2007– Honda presented to the world the exciting Accord Tourer Concept and the new generation of Honda diesel engines, i-DTEC at the 2007 Frankfurt motor show.
The premiere of the Accord Tourer Concept provides a strong indication of the design direction of the all-new generation Accord Tourer set to debut in mid-2008. The wider, lower look signals a sportier, more emotional styling approach, and while the design of the current Accord Tourer maximises its load-carrying capability, the new model goes for smarter, sleeker proportions while retaining a strong degree of versatility and practicality. The Concept's greater width makes for a more spacious cabin and also allows an increased track for enhanced handling characteristics.
The all-new Accord range will boast one of the first all-Euro 5-compliant engine line-ups which will consist of two i-VTEC petrol engines of 2.0 and 2.4-litre capacities and a newly developed 2.2-litre i-DTEC next-generation diesel engine. Compared to the current Accord engine line-up, power output will be boosted and emissions and fuel economy significantly improved.
The latest engines will be complemented by innovative new chassis technology that will deliver exceptional handling, greater linear stability and a more involving driving experience without compromising ride comfort.
The all-new Accord will debut in Sedan and Tourer forms at the 2008 Geneva motor show.
The all-new i-DTEC is the 2nd diesel engine Honda has developed. By further improving the current award winning i-CTDi's superb performance, fuel economy and emission efficiencies, i-DTEC has achieved various stringent emission standards in the U.S., Japan and Europe (Honda test data).
The first phase of the programme - compliance with the Euro 5 legislation expected in 2009 - has already reached fruition, and an example of the new engine, which makes its first appearance in next year's Accord range, is being shown on the stand.
Honda continues to work on the second phase of development of its latest diesel engine and has already achieved compliance with the stringent US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II/Bin 5 emissions requirements. This is of particular significance to the European market in that the Tier II standards are even more demanding than the Euro 6 requirements which remain at the proposal stage. An example of this engine is also on display at the stand.

The 2.2-litre i-DTEC gets 50+ mpg in the city and has a top speed of 130 mph, if all cars had a diesel option like the Accord we would save billions!

Wow. That's the best looking Honda in aeons. Possibly the best looking wagon available (assuming it won't be neutered for production). Maybe it will come to the US as an Acura.

It's gross. Honda has become GM, big stretched out fugly things with giant brand name logos stuck to them. Where is the Honda I used to love that made small, fun to drive economy cars?
Now it's more weight, more HP, more more more in every dimension!

I'm not sure I love the styling or size either, but I really want there to be an Accord station wagon again. There is a dearth of larger station wagons available in the States, and I really don't want to have to resort to an SUV or minivan for my family transportation.

When are we going to see the diesel engines on this side of the pond? I can't wait.

I'm 6'3" tall. I wonder if I can sit in it without my head jammed into the roof, and my knees in the steering wheel.
(Honda, are you listening?)

Lets hope the tailgate is more reliable than the existing Accord Tourer - if the electric motor fails (and it does) you can't even open the tailgate from outside.

By all means, please bring the Accord Tourer to the US. I have a 1995 manual Accord wagon with 196,000 miles, with virtually nothing to replace it. I'd love to have a new manual Accord wagon, especially in diesel form. It provides as much floor area as a medium SUV with the handling, low ride, and gas mileage of a car. Please, please bring it to the US!
