Chicago shifting city vehicles to hybrids, buys 300 Toyotas

Chicago is one of the largest cities in the US and they want to get greener. The city currently has 5,400 vehicles in their municipal fleet and they have decided to spend $8.7 million over the next three years on hybrid vehicles. They will be purchasing 300 Toyota Priuses and Camry and Highlander hybrids, split evenly among them. The vehicles will be put into service with the police and fire departments. Another goal of the program is to boost the number of alternative fuel vehicles in the city fleet by ten percent annually.

The Fed Govt. and every State, City, Town and Company should do this adding an additional 1-5% of hybrids to their fleet each year.
As the years go by and the tech improves they could then buy plug in hybrids and then pure electric vehicles getting off gas completely.

Yup, the hybrid market has reached saturation.
They're blowin' 'em out to fleets.

AMcA has an interesting interpretation of this. Aren't they at something like 2% of the market? I would say rather than market saturation, hybrids are finally gaining mainstream acceptance. They have proven to have lower operating costs and are being seen as a responsible choice not only environmentally, but also fiscally.
