Video: Robin Chase, founder of Zipcar, GoLoco at AltWheels Boston 2007
At AltWheels Boston 2007, I had an interesting conversation with Robin Chase, co-founder of Zipcar and founder of GoLoco. In the video above, Robin talks about GoLoco, a Facebook web app that allows you to share rides and share the cost of travel with friends online. Not a GPS in every car within 5 years, but a black box that will charge road user fees by the mile. GPS systems can track your location. I am totally opposed to the use of GPS systems for road pricing. We can preserve people's locational privacy if we use sophisticated software systems, and we must demand that this be the case. Zero knowledge proofs, also used in some voting machines, can enable accurate charges and not reveal a driver's location.

Robin Chase, I will change it but I really don't think it makes a difference. A wireless system that encrypts location or a GPS system that does not relay location can both still have a back door for law enforcement. I can't think of any form of communication that the government cannot tap with a warrant. I don't see why this would be any different especially when it has so much potential for information gathering.
