San Francisco looking at bike sharing, through Clear Channel
Many European cities, including most prominently Paris and Copenhagen, have large bicycle sharing programs. The programs offer bicycles that are parked at stations all over the city that people can use either for free or a small charge whenever they need. When they are done they just leave the bike at the nearest station. Now San Francisco wants a bike share system of their own.
The city is currently negotiating with Clear Channel for an advertising deal at transit shelters in the city. As part of the deal, the city wants Clear Channel to set up a similar program. While the such programs are generally a great idea and are particularly popular in Europe, San Francisco's geography seems ill-suited. The city has a lot of elevation changes that might limit the appeal for many people. Nonetheless, it's good to see a city in the US try something new.

As a long-time San Francisco resident who has seen many bikes stripped or stolen, I have to say the only way this will work is if we get a police force that cares about doing their job. But we sure haven't had anything like that in many, many years.

All of the bikes wil end up at the stations near the bottom of the hills!

This is great news. I've been hoping SF would do a program similar to Paris. Despite the hills, SF has a large bicycle community.

I'm pretty sure Portland, Oregon already did this in the 90s. Take that Europe!
