UK to install 250 new public charging stations by next spring

With the growing popularity of electric vehicles in England adding public charging stations seems like an obvious idea. Electricity producer EDF is partnering with manufacturer Elektromotive to install 250 new charging points over the next six months in London and elsewhere in the country. EVs like the Reva G-Wiz have gained a foothold because they are exempt from the congestion charge that drivers have to pay to go into central London. Two hundred of the 240V charging stations will go into London with most of the rest in Brighton and Sheffield. Charging fees will be determined by local governments with some expected to offer the service for free.

That’s a cute little car in the front of the others. Is that a unicorn? Apparently, it won’t be long before others are following suit. I can’t wait...

It´s wonderful to see that the brits are getting more and more environmentally friendly. Everyone country should follow their lead, that way electric vehicles will attract customers much faster. Great work Britain!

Is that an EV1 in the picture? Aren't they extinct?
How about some information on the Reva G-Wiz, just for the curious?

Good to see points being installed in Brighton. It's traditionally been a very open and green (and coastal) city but importantly in this case, it's only a bit over 50 miles from central London so within range for the coming generation of EVs.

It's an old picture Blackbirdhighway.
The first car shwown is the sleek EV1, in blue. The cars behind it are Rav4 EVs. They're electric Toyotas!
A few hundered Rav4 EVs are owned by both electrical utilities and private hands today. Toyota sold the ones left (from the initial crushing) after much pressure. Unfortunately, nearly all EV1s were destroyed. Only a small handful still exist at colleges and such. These have been disabled however. I have heard of a rumour that GM still has a fully-functioning EV1 though!!!

Thanks, Joseph. There's more than a bit of irony in an article about the rising popularity of EVs with an accompanying picture of the EV1!
I understand that there was also an EV1 given to the Smithsonian, but then with the bad publicity of "Who Killed The Electric Car", GM asked them not to put it on display. Too bad, GM could have really gained enormous advantage by continuing the EV1, even if they didn't make money on it. They could have deflected much of the critism against the Hummer, by saying, Look, we offer the both the Hummer and the EV1, if customers want to be green or not, it's up to them, not us.
They could have also had the Volt already on the streeets by now. I would be willing to bet that Tesla will be more successful with both the roadster and their future sedan than GM will be with any of their electric efforts, at least over the next 10 years.

Rumor says that due to sloppy bookkeeping GM lost track of at least one EV1 which is still in private hands -- somewhere.
And there's another possibility. . . There are still a small number of electric S-10 pickup trucks in private hands. They used exactly the same powertrain as the EV1. If somebody could get his hands on one of those disabled EV1s, it should be possible to take components from an S-10 and use them to re-enable the car.
A restored and functioning EV1 outside of GM's control would be a highly valuable collector's item, to say the least.

Well, pigs do fly. And an EV1 that was stuffed-and-mounted as a university gift was restored to original following efforts by students, faculty, and EV Bones.
