Governator signs bill increasing motorists' fees to pay for alternative fuel research

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that will increase motorists' fees, including a $3 increase for car registration and an increase in the smog abatement charge from $12 to $20, in mid-2008. The higher fees will raise $210m for research in alternative energy and clean-air technology. Arnold actually won the election for governor promising to roll back an unpopular vehicle fee, but a spokeswoman for the governor said this new fee is not inconsistent with that philosophy at all. OK, then.

You are showing your political bias with summaries like this. Don't slap him in the face for doing the right thing, just because he's a Republican. If every governor did what he has done for the environment our nation would be in a better place.

So political bias on this blog is wrong but Prius bias is OK?!?!? I think you're kidding no one but yourself as to the level of fair-handedness on this blog. Granted it is not as "out there" as TTAC.... I mean they're so biased they won't even use radial tires.

I don't see the political bias. It simply says that he promised to roll back the tax if elected, and now has decided to increase it. That would be true regardless of whether he is a Republican, Democrat, or independent. Or are you referring to his nickname? He even calls himself that.

The Governor has shown a bit of practical pragmatism rare in politics. He promised to roll back the registration fee, and he did. But he didn't promise to never ever raise rates, as he knew there might come a time when the revenue was needed, and with oil prices going up, that time has arrived.
